PURPOSE:To easily change a 4-stage mill and a 5-stage mill to each other without any essential change of a mill by installing a spindle supporting device bringing a spindle not driving a roll during rolling in the 5-stage mill to be freely rotatable at a roll end of the non-driven roll. CONSTITUTION:As for roll change form a 4-stage mill to a 5-stage mill, a spindle supporting device 11 is connected to a non-driven side spindle 12 by inserting a connecting part 13b of an outside frame 13 into a connecting recessed part 12a of the spindle 12. As the result, the frame 13 is brought to be freely rotatable against a shaft end of a non-driven side roll 10 through bearings 14, 15. Therefore, a spindle coupling 12 is supported and rotated by the device 11 without transmitting power to the non-driven roll. As for change from the 5-stage mill to the 4-stage mill, the device 11 installed at a shaft end of the roll 10 is disconnected from the spindle coupling 12. Thus, roll change is performable without attaching and detaching the spindle 12 for roll changing from the 4-stage mill to the 5-stage mill and for reverse changing.
