PURPOSE:To improve riding comfort by dividing a cylinder of a shock absorber in two chambers where a bulkhead is fitted at the out side of the piston compression stroke, so as to form not only an orifice and communication holes but also an auxiliary flow passage equiped with a check valve. CONSTITUTION:When the tip end of a piston stem 25 comes in contact with a flange 47a of an advance-return stem 47, or when the advance-retur stem 47 is pushed to the direction as shown by an arrow head because hydraulic pressure O in a piston chamber 35 becomes maximum, small holes 54 are fallen into a backing hole 45 of a bulkhead 33. Accordingly, this does not permit the piston storing chamber 35 to be communicated with a no-piston storing chamber 37 through a shaft hole 53 and the small holes 54, then the adjusting flow of working fluid O can be effected only through a small gap between the advance-return stem 47 and the backing hole 45 so as to generate a damping force. And when hydraulic pressure in the storing chamber 35 is excessively built up, a check valve 65 of an auxiliary communication hole 61 is opened allowing pressure oil to flow into the no-piston storing chamber 37 so as to permit hydraulic pressure to be dropped. With this, riding comfort can be improved.
