PURPOSE:To measure the shape of an amorphous material such as coke, etc., by non-contact, and to automatically discriminate whether it passes through a sieve screen or not, by using both the shortest diameter and the intermediate diameter of the amorphous material measured by using X rays, as indexes. CONSTITUTION:Three diameters of a plane vision shortest pinch diameter Wshort, a plane vision longitudinal pinch diameter Wlong, and the maximum height Hmax are measured by projecting X rays to an amorphous material C transferred by a conveyer belt 2, and processing the output of an X-ray linear sensor 3. Subsequently, the shortest diameter Dmin and the intermediate diameter Dmed are determined from among them. A correlation expression in which said shortest diameter Dmin and intermediate diameter Dmed are variables, for instance, a correlation expression such as an expression in which (a) and (b) are constants is derived in advance by statistical method. In this state, its left side and right side of the equation are compared, and whether said material passes through a sieve screen or not is decided by its value.
