PURPOSE: To obtain the subject product free from forming and a reduction in the solution viscosity of cellulose ether by dissolving a water-soluble cellulose ether in an alcohol slurry or an alcohol-containing organic solvent mixture and reacting a specified silane compound therewith. ;CONSTITUTION: A methylalkoxydihalogenosilane (A), methylalkyldialkoxysilane (B) or methylalkyldiacetoxysilane (C) of formula I (wherein R¹ is a 1-13c alkyl, vinyl or allyl; and X is Cl, Br, an alkoxy or acetoxy) is dropped into a solution of a water-soluble cellulose ether of formula II (wherein R is H methyl, ethyl, hydroxymethyl, etc.) in an alcohol slurry or alcohol-containing solvent mixture in the presence of a catalyst and an acid acceptor comprising an amine in an equivalent ratio of the amine to the halogen atoms in the silane molecule of (1/2 to 1.1/2) : 1 when the compound A is used as the raw material or in the presence of an acid catalyst when the compound B or C is used as the raw material to effect reaction, thus giving the objective product.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
