PURPOSE:To read various card-shaped materials with one reader by preferentially processing either of first and second read signals having the same contents and reading one read signal at the time of non-input of the other read signal. CONSTITUTION:If the reader is so set that the first read signal from a first read head 11 is preferentially processed, the first read signal is given to a processing circuit 13 as it is when the first read signal is read, and the first read signal is preferentially given to the processing circuit 13 when first and second read signals are read. Even if the ABA mode is set and a magnetic card for JBA is inserted by misoperation, the signal read by either of the first read head 11 and a second read head 12 is given to the control circuit 13.
