PURPOSE: To remove low concentration oxidizable organic contaminants from an oxygen- containing gas by making them adsorbed on an adsorbent and then subjecting them to in situ catalytic oxidation to obtain innocuous products while attaining water removal and oxygen enrichment through the desorption/oxidation of the contaminants. ;CONSTITUTION: A gaseous feed stream 10 is first passed through an adsorption/oxidation zone 100 filled with the adsorbent having the selectivity in residence of the contaminants and contacting directly with an oxidation catalyst and the operation is continued until the effluence of the contaminants from the zone 100 is neglected and then made into a stream 12 of the contaminant-free gas. At this time, the gaseous stream 10 is changed to an adsorption/reaction zone 200, and a recycling stream 14 is withdrawn from the zone 100, enriched in oxygen concentration with oxygen from a stream 16 and cooled at a gas cooler/water condenser 300 to drain water as a stream 18. The cooled recycling stream is heated to a desired desorption/oxidation temperature with a heater 500 and finally returned to the zone 100 to produce oxidized contaminants consisting of carbon dioxide and water by making a part of the contaminants desorbed and then oxidizing. This recycling loop operation is repeated until the concentration of the contaminants in the zone 100 is lowered to a desired level.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
