PURPOSE:To obtain the title copolymer which is easy of synthesis and controlled in the rate of hydrolysis, by polymerizing a specified silyl (meth)acrylate and an ethylenically unsatd. compd. not contg. Si in its molecule. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. monomers consisting of a silyl (meth)acrylate (A) in which one monovalent hydrocarbon group contg. a bicycloheptane ring and two methyl groups are bonded to Si (e.g., dimethylnorbornyl methacrylate), and an ethylenically unsatd. compd. B (e.g., methyl methacrylate) not contg. Si in its molecule are copolymerized in the presence of 0.01-10pts.wt. polymn. initiator (e.g., azobisisobutyronitrile) in 20-1,000pts.wt organic solvent (e.g., xylene) under heating to give the title copolymer of the formula as shown [where R1 is H, methyl; R2 is a monovalent hydrocarbon group contg. a bicycloheptane ring, such as (ethylidene)norbornyl; R3 is R1; R4 is phenyl, -CO2R5; R5 is alkyl; n and m are such that n+m=100-10 thousand and n/n+m=10-95%].
