PURPOSE: To provide a method for preventing or decreasing the proliferation of smooth muscle and the hyperplasia of vascular endothelial layer to prevent and treat hypertrophic vascular diseases by administering an active amount of a carboxamide derivative or a hydroxycrotonamide derivative. CONSTITUTION: The subject disease is treated by administering an agent containing a compound of the formula I or the formula II (R1 is methyl, a 3-6C alkyl, etc.; R2 is CF3 or CN; R3 is a 1-4C alkyl or H; X is C or N) by oral, parenteral, intravascular, intranasal, endobronchial, transcutaneous or rectal administration or by the use of a vessel stent impregnated with the compound of the formula I or II. It is effective for the prevention and treatment of hyperplasia of endosporium smooth muscle cell, restenosis and vascular occlusion caused by autoimmune diseases, allogenic immunity-relating immunity, infection diseases including endotoxin and herpes virus, metabolic diseases such as atherosclerosis, and vascular injury caused by the insertion of catheter or vessel rubbing operation.
