PURPOSE:To improve its durability by admixing a specified carbon raw material with a mixture between a refractory filler composed of an alumina clinker and a spinel clinker and alumina cement. CONSTITUTION:A refractory filler is prepared by mixing an alumina clinker such as an electrolytic alumina with a spinel clinker such as a sintered spinel in a weight ratio within a range of (33/67)(85/15) so that the weight ratio of (MgO)/(A$12O3) may be 0.5-0.05. With 80-95 pts.wt. above-mentioned refractory filler, 5-20 pts.wt. alumina cement is blended and 0.2-5 pts.wt. carbon raw material such as pitch powder composed of =80wt.% solid carbon, having a self- sintering property and having = about 1mm particle size is blended with 100 pts.wt. above-obtained mixture to obtain a composition for an amorphous refractory material. A prescribed amount of water is added to the resultant composition and the resultant mixture is subsequently kneaded, molded and cured, thus giving the objective hardened material.
