PURPOSE:To obtain the title membrane by treating a biocatalyst-contg. water-sol uble silk fibroin membrane at a R.H. of 70-100% and 1-50 deg.C followed by drying to ensure the immobilization of said biocatalyst under mild conditions without deactivation. CONSTITUTION:Raw silk is scoured and freed from sericin in a conventional technique followed by dissolution in, e.g., a cupri-ammonium solution and dialysis against water to effect desalination, thus preparing a silk fibroin solution. A biocatalyst such as enzyme or antibody is then dissolved in the silk fibroin solution followed by casting the resultant solution on a substrate such as an acrylate resin plate and air-drying. Thence, a biocatalyst-contg. water-soluble silk fibroin membrane thus formed, peeled off the substrate is left to stand at R.H. of 70-100% and 1-50 deg.C for normally 3-24hr to effect water insolubilization followed by drying at R.H. of =60% and -10-60 deg.C. Thus, water insolubilization of silk fibroin can easily be accomplished without the need for using any special device along with retaining the activity of the biocatalyst.
