PURPOSE:To obtain a spherical organic composite clay mineral, containing a water-swellable clay mineral and water-soluble substance, having smooth and moist feeling of use as well as excellent humectant action and particularly suitable in the field of cosmetics and medicines. CONSTITUTION:A spherical organic composite clay mineral containing a water- swellable clay mineral and a water-soluble substance. This spherical organic composite clay mineral is obtained by spray drying a dissolved dispersion of the water-soluble substance and water-swellable clay mineral. A mucopolysaccharide, water-soluble high polymer, polyhydric alcohol, organic amine, water-soluble protein, quaternary ammonium salt, phospholipid, amino acid, derivatives thereof, etc., are cited as the water-soluble substance and the polyhydric alcohol and mucopolysaccharide are particularly preferred. One or two or more of such water soluble substances are optionally selected. The water-swellable clay mineral is a layer silicate mineral belonging to the smectite group and, e.g. montmorillonite, beidellite, etc., are cited. Either one of natural and synthetic products may be used.
