PURPOSE: To provide a method and device for remotely changing the programmable firmware of a PROM provided on an interactive network substrate (substrate) equipped with an LAN interface. ;CONSTITUTION: An LAN communication program operates the multi-address communication of inquiry through an LAN to a designated substrate, receives substrate position information for the inquiry, and establishes communication with the designated substrate. An ROM firmware image is down-loaded through an LAN interface to the RAM of the designated substrate. The validity of the ROM firmware image stored in the RAM is confirmed. A PROM is controlled so that the storage position is deleted, and preservable data are transmitted from the ROM to the prescribed position of the ROM firmware image stored in the RAM. After a flash operation, the substrate is reinitialized, and an instruction from the image of the firmware stored in the PROM is executed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
