PURPOSE:To detect the water immersion state at a specific position from an increase in the bending loss of an optical fiber core due to the swelling of a water absorbing material by using an optical fiber which is not affected by electromagnetic disturbance. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber core 10 is bent to a radius R of curvature with the swelling pressure of the water absorbing material 9 through the operation of a wavy material 11. Then, its bending loss increases abruptly as the radius of curvature decreases. For the purpose, the recess and projection shape of the wavy device 11 having recesses and projections at its bottom part is selected properly to give a proper radius of curvature to the optical fiber core 10 when the water absorbing material 9 swells in absorbing water; when the radius of curvature of the optical fiber core 10 decreases, the loss of the core 10 increases and the waveform on a light pulse tester 14 is observed to detect a water immersion place.
