PURPOSE: To provide a method for specifying the position of a money amount field on a document. CONSTITUTION: This method is provided for specifying and discriminating the position of an amount filed 64 on a check 40 or any other financial document. This method is provided with a step for discriminating the type of characters in respective rectangular blocks 54 and 60 as any one of mechanical printing, handwriting, decimal point or vertical bar and a next step for determining which block is to be discriminated as the money amount filed 64 using that discriminated type.
