PURPOSE: To obtain high permeability and separation characteristics as well as strength by preparing a part of sulfonic acid groups attached to arom. rings that form a part of the polymeric principal chains from sulfonated arom. polymers in lithium salt form of the specified structure. ;CONSTITUTION: In fluid separation composite membranes by which at least one fluid component can be separated from a fluid mixture, the composite membrane comprises at least one sulfonated arom. polymers in lithium salt form, wherein at least one arom. polymer in lithium salt form contains sulfonic acid groups attached to arom. rings that form a part of the polymeric principal chains, and at least 25% of the sulfonic acid groups contain lithium ions as counter ions. Further, at least one sulfonated arom. polymers in lithium salt form is sulfonated 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether polymers in lithium salt form defined to have the chemical structure of the formula.
