PURPOSE: To provide the method and device of monitoring an optical transmission medium with an optical fiber connection by using fault position technology with the help of optical time domain reflection based on correlation. ;CONSTITUTION: OTDR(optical time domain reflection) based on correlation is applied independently from a position by the separation of the signal portion I1 of a distribution signal I in a forward direction from the signal portion R1 of a reflection signal R in a backward direction at a separation point voluntarily selected in the fiber connection of a network to detect and correlate both signals. A device to perform the correlative OTDR at independently positions in such a way is provided with a separation means 60 having the first signal output 68 and the second signal output 66 so that the signal portion I1 and the signal portion R1 can be sent to optical receivers 70, 72, respectively, via these outputs. The received signal portions are detected by the receivers and demodulated, and then corresponding electric signals are supplied to a correlating equipment 78 to generate an OTDR signal for an OTDR image means 82.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
