PURPOSE: To obtain a novel quaternary ammonium salt compound exhibiting an excellent antibacterial effect and a wide antibacterial spectrum and high in safety. ;CONSTITUTION: A quaternary ammonium salt compound of formula I (Z is pyridine, quinoline; R3 is 2-18C alkylene or alkenylene; R4 is 6-18C alkyl bonded to the nitrogen atom of Z; R1, R2 are 1-3C alkyl bonded to the atom of Z except the nitrogen atom, OH, amino, 1-13C alkoxy, H; X is anion), e.g. 2,2'-(1,6 dithiohexamethylene)-bis-(1-dodecylpyridinium bromide). The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a bismercapto compound of formula II with a compound of formula: R1X (R4 is 618C alkyl). The compound of formula II is obtained by reacting a mercapto compound of formula III with the formula: X-R3-X and subsequently treating the obtained compound of formula IV with an alkaline solution.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
