PURPOSE: To successively and automatically decide the display positions of an optimum dimension line and a dimension value based on a design rule in accordance with input from an input device without being conscious of the design rule of a dimension by an operator, to display a dimension plotting candidate on a screen and to execute the plotting operation of the dimension based on it at the time of plotting the dimension. ;CONSTITUTION: A dimension form generation part 112 generates the form of the virtual dimension from a present cursor position, and a graphic and dimension data, which affect the decision of the plotting position of the dimension, are retrieved from drawing data 103 by using a data retrieval/registration part 117. Furthermore, design rule data is retrieved. Then, the plotting position of the dimension line is obtained by a dimension line plotting position decision part 113 and the display position of the dimension value by a dimension value display position decision part 114 based on the design rule data.
