PURPOSE: To increase the reliability of data detection by moving a boundary threshold upward or downward by m-units, counting the number of times when the value of a linear function is above or below a boundary value during movement and moving a boundary in accordance with the count value. ;CONSTITUTION: For increasing data detection reliability in an encoding processing channel, a decoder 300 is used. The boundary threshold is moved upward or moved downward from KW2 by m-units instead of directly calculating an error margin DW2=H'5-KW2 (W2 shows boundary corresponding to state 000 or 111 and Kis constant that can be adjusted). While the value is moved, the counter M(A) counts the number of times when the value of the linear function H'5 is in the boundary KW2+m or below it. While it moves downward, a counter M(B) counts the number of times when the value of H'5 is above the boundary KW2-m. Comparators 356 and 358 select a state offset. The values of +m are added and the W2 boundary is moved by m-units from an initial stage KW2.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
