CULTURE AND GROWTH OF MICROORGANISM CAPABLE OF OXIDIZING AND DECOMPOSING SULFUR COMPOUND CONTAINED IN PETROLEUM AND BIOLOGICAL DESULFURIZATION

PURPOSE:To efficiently culture and grow a microorganism oxidizing and decomposing sulfur compounds contained in petroleum and capable of desulfurizing crude oil or heavy oil by adding a water-soluble inorganic sulfur compound, etc., to a biological reaction tank. CONSTITUTION:When culturing and growing a microorganism capable of oxidizing and decomposing sulfur compounds contained in petroleum in activated sludge of sewage or industrial waste water, this culture and growth of the microorganism for oxidizing and decomposing the sulfur compounds contained in petroleum is carried out by adding a water-soluble inorganic sulfur compound such as a thiosulfate compound or a thiocyan compound and/or a water-soluble organsulfur compound such as thiourea to a biological reaction tank. In addition, removal of the sulfur compounds contained in petroleum is carried out preferably by oxidizing and decomposing the sulfur compounds contained in petroleum in the presence of this microorganism to convert them to water-soluble sulfur compounds under an aerobic condition and dissolving them in water.
