PURPOSE: To enhance the strength and toughness by sintering a compact of a powdery Al2O3-TiO2, mixture in a reducing atmosphere and heat-treating the sintered compact in a specified atmosphere. ;CONSTITUTION: A powdery Al2O3 TiO2, mixture is compacted to obtain a compact. This compact is sintered by heating at 1,300-1,600°C for 2-6hr in a reducing atmosphere under $10-5 partial pressure of oxygen and the sintered compact is heat-treated at 500-1,500°C in an atmosphere under a higher partial pressure of oxygen than that during the sintering to obtain the objective Al2O3-based ceramics contg. fine acicular TiO2 dispersed in particle of polycrystalline Al2O3 having ≤10μm particle diameter orientation in the (0001) faces of Al2O3 crystals.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
