PURPOSE: To produce t-butyl alcohol in a high conversion rate with high selectivity by using an alumina carrier having a pentagonal cross section coated with palladium as a catalyst to catalytically decompose t-butyl hydroperoxide. ;CONSTITUTION: A catalyst prepared by coating alumina having a pentagonal cross section with palladium is used and a t-butyl hydroperoxide raw material soln. wherein 5-30 wt.% t-butyl hydroxyperoxide is contained in a solvent, especially, t-butyl alcohol is brought into contact with the catalyst in a liquid phase at 20-250°C under a pressure of 0.1-7 MPa to convert t-butyl hydroperoxide to t-butyl alcohol. In this catalyst, palladium is 0.1-5% by wt. of alumina. As the solvent used in this reaction, t-butyl alcohol alone or a mixture of t-butyl alcohol and isobutane is pref. Further, by diluting this catalyst with titania or zirconia, reaction can be advanced economically advantageously.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
