PURPOSE: To cause the electrode of a spark plug or an igniter to be durable for severe use. CONSTITUTION: The insert 1 or the like of at least the operation portion of one, both, or all electrodes 2 is made of material containing one or more of intermetallic compounds which have a melting point of 1400 deg.C or more, and display proper durability, thermal shock resistance, and conductivity. The intermetallic compound can form one phase of multi-phase material. The preferable intermetallic compound is ruthenium aluminide.
