PURPOSE: To provide a new antibacterial compound contained in Polymnia sonchifolia (a plant of the family Compositae) and useful as an active component of an antibacterial composition such as plant blight controlling agent and food disinfectant, especially an active component of rice blast controlling agent. ;CONSTITUTION: This antibacterial compound PSF-A contains a germacrene-type sesquiterpene lactone as principal skeleton and has the following properties. Color and nature, white powder; melting point, 146-148°C; molecular weight, 464. It can be obtained by finely cutting the leaf and stalk of Polymnia sonchifolia, grinding the cut pieces, extracting with a solvent such as water and methanol and separating and purifying the extracted liquid by silica gel chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, etc.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
