PURPOSE: To provide a quick and convenient method where the cost and waste liquid are reduced by admixing a sample with a carrier solution containing chloride ions and determining both homovanillic acid(HVA) and vanillylmandelic acid(VMA). ;CONSTITUTION: When a flow injection analytic (FIA) method is employed, both HVA and VMA emit fluorescent light if the reaction takes place at pH9.5-10.9 and the intensity is highest. Only HVA emits fluorescent light for pH11.5-12.5 and no disturbance of other organic compound is present. Consequently, the HVA and VMA can be determined separately by setting the pH appropriately at the time of oxidative reaction and fluorescent measurement and then measuring the intensity of fluorescent light by FIA. When a compound for imparting chloride ions is added to an ammonia alkaline solution being employed as the carrier solution in FIA, the base line is stabilized at the time of detecting the fluorescent light and accurate measurements can be obtained with excellent reproducibility.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
