PURPOSE: To improve combustion efficiency by passing gas with different gas flows from a plenum into a furnace corresponding part of a floor in order to selectively fluidize a floor part of a particulate material in a furnace zone. CONSTITUTION: For supporting a floor 25 of a particulate material a lower portion of a furnace region is horizontally extended. A plenum 26 is defined between a plate 24 and a floor 22, and is divided into two plenum zones 26a and 26b with two vertical compartment wall 28 with pressure in the plenum regions 26a and 26b being independently controlled. A plurality of nozzles 36 are extended through holes provided in the plate 24. Air from the plenum regions 26a and 26b is exhausted to corresponding floor portions 25a and 25b respectively extending to a just above portion in the two plenum regions to fluidize that floor portion. The air passing through both floor portions 25a and 25b fluidizes the floor 25 to promote combustion of a fuel even either in the plenum region 26a or 26b.
