A method of protecting 3-isothiazolones of formula (I) against chemical degradation is claimed, where Y = 1-18C alkyl or 3-12C cycloalkyl, opt. substd. with OH, halo, cyano, alkylamino, dialkylamine, arylamino, carboxy, carbalkoxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, arylthio, haloalkoxy, cycloalklamino, carbamoxy, or isothiazolonyl; opt. substd. 2-8C alkenyl, or alkynyl; 7-10C aralkyl, opt. substd. with 1 or more halogen, 1-4C allyl or 1-4C alkoxy; or aryl opt. substd. with 1 or more halogen, NO2, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkyl-acylamino, carb(1-4C alkoxy or sulaphamyl. R1 and R2 each may = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 4-8C cycloalkyl, or joined to form phenyl; comprising incorporating an effective amt. of S-contg. cpd. capable of reversibly forming an adduct with (I). - Pref. stabilisers are N-based heterocyclic thiols, esp. pref. 4-mercaptopyridine, Na salt of 2-mercaptopyridine, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and 4-methyl-4-H-1, 2,4-triazole-3-thiol.
