This invention relates to a method for purifying aqueous mixtures containing one or more polluting substances by photodegradation catalysed by a semi-conductor. This method, which consists of subjecting such mixtures to irradiation by a lamp which emits at least a fraction of radiation at a wavelength of less than 500 nm and is characterized by a value of less than 40 W/cm2 for the specific radiating power if at high pressure and less than 0.2 W/cm2 if the lamp is at low pressure, makes possible an appreciable increase in the yield of the degradative process.
