The battery stoppers are moulded as a set, with all the stoppers (1) attached to a strap (6). The stoppers are positioned along the strap at regular intervals. The zones of the strap between the stoppers are flexible and allow bending of the strap so the stoppers can be fitted to the spacing of the battery cell openings. A tongue at one end of the strip allows it to be removed in a single operation to give access to all cells of the battery. The sections of the strap between the plugs can be broken along lines of weakness if individual cell access is preferred. The stoppers are designed to allow escape of gas, but not of electrolyte.
