In a transmitting device, test pulses which represent bit combined to form bursts are formed defined in shape and amplitude and jittered in a defined manner by reading out characteristic curve shape data and characteristic jitter data from digital memories in the sense of simulating particular cable types and lengths of these; the test pulses received from the test specimen are accepted in a receiving device and compared with the test pulses sent by the transmitting device.
