Dynamic penetrometer (penetration tester) for geotechnical studies

It consists of an assembly for supporting/triggering a ram 1 provided with a casing in which are defined two compartments 2 and 5, the first of which contains the ram 3 vertically, consisting of a guide for displacement of the ram, whilst the second contains a chain 6 actuated by a hydraulic motor 8 and to which a cam 9 is secured which, in its upward displacement, penetrates the compartment 2 of the ram, via the slot which connects both departments and impacts on a lateral step 10 of said ram, entraining it upwards as far as an upper limit position where said ram is suddenly released in order to fall under gravity, striking the anvil 4 which transmits the impact via the conventional rod to the penetration cone. A sensor 11 on which the cam 9 acts during each complete rotation of the chain 6 makes it possible to take account of and to establish the strike ribbon (rate) of the ram 3, this support/triggering assembly 1 also being established on a positioning device which allows free vertical displacement thereof and where another pair of sensors in turn supply information to a recorder assembly regarding the advance and speed of penetration of the cone. In parallel with the rod there is, laterally, a hydraulic cylinder provided with another sensor, specifically a transducer which in turn supplies information regarding lateral friction of the penetration cone, and with the information supplied by all these sensors the recording device digitally displays the parameters being studied.
