In a process for the per-oxide-free grafting of ethylenically unsaturated carboxy-lic acids, carboxylic anhydrides and/or their derivativesto a homopolymer or copolymer of ethylene having a den-sity less than 0.930 g/cm3, the monomers to be graftedare used in a concentration of from 0.01 to 0.5% byweight and the grafting reaction is carried out at from210 to 300°C in a conventional extruder or mixer in theabsence of a free radical initiator. The graft copoly-mers are used for the preparation of ionomers and adhe-sion promoters.
