REMOVAL OF SALTS FROM AQUEOUS ALKANOLAMINES USING AN ELECTRODIALYSIS CELL WITH AN ION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE

Method which includes passing a gas streamcontaining carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfurdioxide, mercaptans and other acid gases through anaqueous alkanolamine solution to remove the carbondioxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, mercaptans,etc., from the gaseous stream. Heat-stable alkanolaminesalts form in the aqueous alkanolamine solution due tothe acid contaminants (other than hydrogen sulfide orcarbon dioxide) removed from the gas stream. A base isadded to the aqueous alkanolamine solution to convertall or part of the heat-stable alkanolamine salts intoalkanolamine and simple salts. The base-treated aqueousalkanolamine solution is electrodialyzed in anelectrodialysis cell containing ion exchange membranes.The purified aqueous alkanolamine solution can be usedagain to remove carbon dioxide, etc., from the gasstream.
