An optical disk recorder is capable of operating withdiverse types of optical media. An device initializationprocedure is repeated for each receipt of each opticalmedium. Such procedure includes moving a objective lens toan extreme radial position, defocussing the lens at a mostremote position, then calibrating the laser circuits toensure that the emission of radiation from the laser willnot inadvertently destroy signals recorded on the justreceived medium. Then the medium type is read from themedium and based upon the type indication, variousadditional calibrating procedures are followed and differentsources of laser control values are used for signalexchanging operations between the recorder and receivedoptical medium.
