Alumino-silicate glass-ceramic coated carbon-carbon composite and graphitic substrates having resistance to oxidation and thermal cycling. The coatings are fabricated from plasmasprayed powders of beta-spodumene, cordierite, beta-eucryptite or beta-quartz and are rapidly recrystallized by laser processing.
