Method and device for optimizing gas flow/transfer in operational volumes, with both horizontal surface sizes being considerably larger than the vertical size. In this specific context, aeration takes place in basins through porous materials or perforated membranes. The aerated lagooning method according to the invention separates purifying and aerating functions as shown by the presence of two separated areas, where sediments and also the evolutionary process play a fundamental part. A specific geometrical configuration maximizes the role of the inherent breathing of sediments in supplying oxygen, effluents being recycled, on the contrary, when their oxygen content is at a minimum at the time when these effluents are partially recycled in the aerating system. The dual nitrifying/denitrifying process is used in the same plants.
