The invention concerns a method of planning mining operations by determining the direction, distance, speed and sequence of the operations in a tectonically stressed sedimentation deposit, in particular a coal deposit. In order to improve the method with respect to the usefulness of the planning criteria, the invention calls for the loosening, crushing and compression effects in the rock caused by the tectonic energy, as well as the tectonic rock movement influenced by these effects, to be taken into account in defining the physical limits of the deposit for planning purposes and for the mining operations to be directed as a function of the excavation potential thus determined and/or the fragility of the extracted coal and/or the gas characteristics and/or the dust characteristics and/or the propping characteristics and/or the stress-release behaviour and/or the stress concentrations determined for the deposit.
