In a method of removing impurities from the exhaust gas of a furnace, wherein the major part of sulphur dioxide is first removed by means of additives, further sulphur dioxide is then removed in a first layer of carbonaceous adsorbent and, if applicable, the nitrogen oxides are removed in a second layer of carbonaceous adsorbent after addition of a reducing agent, at least a part of adsorbent taken off from the first layer being passed to incineration, it is provided, for improved disposal, that the filter ash (9) is removed from the exhaust gas of a waste incineration plant before removal (10) of the major part of sulphur dioxide, that the filter ash (9) is introduced at least together with the carbonaceous adsorbent (17) taken off from the first layer (15) into a melting unit (25) and fused therein, and the exhaust gas (33) from the melting step is added, after cooling (34), to the exhaust gas of the exhaust incineration plant at least before removal of the major part of the sulphur dioxide, while the metals condensed out on cooling of the exhaust gas from the melting step are taken off.
