A method of making a fabric to be processed with ink jet dyeing and, further, to a method of ink jet dyeing for forming a clear and sharp image free from bleeding of ink on the fabric. In particular, the invention relates to : a method of making a fabric for ink jet dyeing characterized in that the fabric is subjected to application of hydrous treating liquid constituted of hydrous polymeric solution in which water-insoluble solvent is dispersed or emulsified, and then to drying ; and a method of ink jet dyeing characterized by executing ink jet printing with the use of said fabric and, after development of color, said fabric is washed for removal of pretreating agent.
