Rapid changes in oxygen demand and feed air pressure in cryogenic air separation unit are compensated for by way of a net transfer of refrigeration, in the form of liquid nitrogen, into and out of the distillation system (24). This transfer of refrigeration is implemented using a storage vessel (60) of liquid nitrogen connected to the reflux path (44) of the distillation system (24).
