Once a black pixel has been detected in a binary coded pattern (PI), the environment of the black pixel having a reduced number of neighbouring pixels is checked for further black pixels. The thus determined real size of the continuity zone (for example CC1) formed by all detected black pixels is compared to a predeterminable maximal size. If the real size is smaller than the maximum size, an increased number of neighbouring pixels, with respect to the previously selected number, is selected, and the environment of each pixel belonging to the already built continuity zone (for example CC1) is checked for additional black pixels on the basis of said increased number of neighbouring pixels.
