The residual gas is subjected to a treatment comprising a phase for the hydrogenation and hydrolysis (1) in order to bring the sulfur compounds in the form of h2 s, a cooling (4, 10) at a temperature in the range of theta to 180degré c, theta being the dew point of the water of the gaseous effluent from the phase of hydrogenation and hydrolysis, and a selective catalytic oxidation (2a) of the h2 s of sulphur at temperatures in the range of theta to 180degré c. leading to a deposit of the sulphur formed on the catalyst and regeneration of the catalyst charged of sulphur (2b), then cooling of the regenerated catalyst in the range of theta to 180degré c. in order to reuse in the phase of catalytic oxidation.
