Method for reducing scrap and improving quality in the extrusion of metal profiles (sections), in particular aluminium profiles. To achieve as uniform as possible a withdrawal length in combination with, as far as possible, the same optimum value of the extrusion residue, continuous adaptation of the desired billet length is performed taking into account the current weight of the bar of raw material as the ratio of the current billet length BLL to the current billet weight BGL and the extrusion data of the last billet extruded.
