The present invention discloses additives for cationic electrodepositable coating compositions for improving hiding power, stability, rheology and oil spot reSistance. The additive is present in an amount of from 0.5 to 40% by weight and is prepared by polymerizing an aqueous dispersion of a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer composition in the presence of a cationic polymer surface active material, in an aqueous medium, under conditions which are disclosed as free radicals do. The coating composition further comprises 60 to 99.5% by weight of a cationic salt group-containing film-forming polymer. The present invention also discloses a coating method comprising electrodepositing the composition on an electrically conductive negative electrode.
