The present invention relates to a zero crossing detector for asynchronous detection of threshold transitions in digitally sampled signal waveforms. An asynchronous digital threshold detector (ADTD) receives the digitized self-clockimg data readbackwaveform and provides the relative position of the zero crossing within the sample period in which zero crossing occurs. Digital outputs useful in recovering data and clock signals are digital forms that can be used directly by a class of asynchronous digital phase detector systems. The asynchronous digital threshold detector is implemented entirely digitally and can be configured for low power consumption using CMOS technology.
