SUBSTANCE: method involves filling a vertical pipe not less than 400 mm in diameter with explosive to a certain height and putting a friable inert material on top of it in the amount 1.5-4 times heavier than the weight of explosive material, igniting said explosive material from the sealed lower end of the pipe. Measurements are repeated, increasing the height of explosive and inert material layers to the moment of explosion and determining the critical height of the layer of explosive H_cr by combined heights of the layers of explosives and inert material (H_expl)_cr and (H_m.mar)_cr in this test, using a relation H_cr=(H_expl)_cr+ (H_m.mar)_crρ_m.mar/ ρ_expl where ρ_expl bulk density of the explosive, ρ_m.mar bulk density of inert material.
