An image precessing system has data entered into buffer (10) having two sections (12, 14) operated in a toggle mode. The data is read into a coding unit (16) that codes the data into a form that has a fixed length compression. The data is transferred after coding to a buffer (18) that also has sections operating in a toggle mode to deliver data to a hard disc storage unit operating at constant speed. This minimises the size needed for the buffer.
