The quick-release safety closure has hinged shoe sections (4) which clamp the flange pairs (1,2) together, and over-centre closure mechanisms consisting of tensioning levers (9,10) and linkages (7,8) which hold the shoe sections in place. The levers of a pair of adjacent closure mechanism overlap in the closed position and can be secured by a locking device (12). The two levers can only be released one after the other. Actuation of the first lever permits just enough movement of the clamping shoes and thus sepn. of the flanges to allow pressure inside the vessel or pipe to be relieved, whilst the two flanges can only be sepd. fully after the second lever has been released.
