Silicon-, copper- and zinc-containing material for the catalytic preparation of alkylhalosilanes and its use

A copper/zinc/tin catalyst is made available. Significant improvements in the reaction rate during the preparation of alkyl- halosilanes by reaction between an alkyl halide and powdered silicon and in the product selectivity are achieved if copper is employed in the catalyst in a critical weight percentage relative to silicon and critical weight ratios of tin and zinc are used relative to copper.
