N - retinoyl - l - amino, mercapto - compounds and intermediates, process for their preparation and their use

N-thioalkyl-retinoic acid amide derivs. of formula (I) and their physilogically tolerable salts are new: R1 = H or 2H; R2 = H, 2H, OH, Me, Et, propyl or oxo; R3 = H, 2H, OH or oxo; R4 = H or 1-3C alkyl or alkenyl; R5 = H or 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl; R6 = 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl, opt. with an alkyl or alkenyl sidechain; R7 = H, 1-4C alkyl or alkenyl (which may contain further functional gps. pref. OH, COOH, alpha-amino-carboxy gps. or a further S atom), or completes a symmetrical thioester or disulphide; R8 =- COOX, 1-4C hydroxy-alkyl or -alkenyl, or (CH2)mCHO; m = 0-3; X = H or 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl. Also new are the intermediates of formulae: Y- = tosylate anion; R18 = allyloxycarbonyl; R118 = R18 or COOH. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) increase the cellular concn. of Vitamin A even when given at low absolute doses because of improved cellular uptake (membrane transfer) so the toxic side effects of Vitamin A are avoided. Then can be used systemically ot topically to prevent or treat mucosal disorders, e.g. secretory and/or differentiation diseases of the respiratory, intestinal and urogenital mucosa such as mucoviscidosis; fibrosis, silicosis; gastritis; ulcers; cystitis, bladder carcinoma etc.
